"I had been painting on rag board since the 1970's. I loved the feel of graphite on the paper, the subtle responsiveness of these ancient tools. But I was tired of looking at my paintings under glass. Normally, works on paper are mounted under glass, to protect them from moisture. This painting from 2001 was painted on gessoed rag board adhered to Dibond, a substrate that Bill Butler at Archival Arts Services in Washington, DC and I invented. Our method sealed the entire surface, preventing moisture damage and obviating glass. At some point though I transitioned to drawing and painting on rigid gessoed panels." jts
